What is Pilates?

Pilates training is built upon select exercises both on mats and on specially-designed equipment, the focus being to balance strength with flexibility, particularly in the core muscles. Pilates also ensures that the body is not forced into uncomfortable positions, carefully alternating stretching and strengthening exercises, resulting in long, lean muscles, flat abs, and a stronger back.

Counterpoint Pilates is the first studio in the area to offer a comprehensive ensemble of Balanced Body Pilates fitness equipment and certified Stott Pilates training.

For those unfamiliar with Pilates, the assorted equipment and exercises were originally developed between the 1920s and 1950s by Joseph H. Pilates, who believed in natural movements to build strength and endurance akin to the movements of animals in the wild. His teachings focus on the coordination of mind and body to tone the body without causing stress to the spine and back. These techniques have become a popular supplement to workout regimens for dancers, professional athletes, and anyone who wishes to gain increased flexibility and strength.

Elizabeth Schmidt

Counterpoint Pilates offers Physical Mind and Stott-certified instructors led by owner Elizabeth Schmidt. She has been educating clients and teachers-in-training in the Kalamazoo area for more than 20 years. She opened Counterpoint Pilates Studio in 2006 in the Rose Street Market building as a fully certified Stott Pilates Studio. She is now located on East Michigan Ave in Kalamazoo. The Stott method uses basic information about human anatomy to introduce clients to exercises that help improve stability, strength and mobility.

Elizabeth has 6 certifications in the Stott Pilates Method and is a fully certified advanced level II Stott Pilates instructor. Prior to the founding of Counterpoint Pilates Studio, Elizabeth designed health and life performance programs for athletes, people seeking rehabilitation from injuries, and others representing a wide range of professional disciplines. Elizabeth has also been certified with the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (1998) and was nationally certified as a personal trainer through WMU and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) (2001). Elizabeth continually updates her training to stay current with changes in the field, including training at the Stott Pilates International Certification Center in Toronto, Canada.

Elizabeth's passion for pilates is evident in the following quote:

"My goal as an instructor is to guide my client to achieve not only a more balanced and higher level of physical condition, but to be empowered and at peace in their own body."
